Research Project Abstract
This is a qualitative research project which strives to assess the most appropriate methods to assist students in establishing their reflective practice. There is an emphasis placed on reflective practice in both the junior cycle and senior cycle; This is evident in the statements of learning, key skills, and the strands and elements of the framework (Department of Education and Skills, 2016). Advancement in one’s work happens upon reflection. Reflection facilitates the questioning of perspectives and the investigation of new ideas, practices, and media. The establishment of a strong reflective practice can aid in the development of work both conceptually and aesthetically. The aims of this study stem from the following research question ‘To what extent can reflective practice aid students to make critical decisions about the development of their visual art project.’(i) to establish a reflective framework to aid students with their conceptual and aesthetic development. (ii) consider the strengths and weaknesses of such approaches to reflective practice. This study was based on the theoretical framework of action research. A number of different data collection methodologies were employed during this project, some include student questionnaires, students’ artwork, and focus group discussions. This research study demonstrated the potential to establish a reflective practice with students at second level, to display advancements in decision making enhancing students’ application of media.
